TRANSPORTATION
Curragh Mine is linked to Queensland’s integrated coal haulage system, specifically designed to provide fast, efficient rail movement of coal to domestic customers and export ports.
Coal trains have made the 300-kilometre journey from the mine to the Port of Gladstone on the east coast since 1984. The Queensland Rail trains are electric locomotives with 100 tonne bottom dump wagons have a carrying capacity of approximately 7,100 tonnes.
With a loading rate of 3,600 tonnes per hour, Curragh Mine turns around trains in 2–3 hours. Coking coal and steaming coal are loaded onto trains from separate 500 tonne capacity surge bins and loading chutes.
Queensland Rail’s coordinated coal haulage system underpins reliability of supply to meet future world demand.
Curragh steaming coal is railed directly to Stanwell Power Station near Rockhampton. Export high quality metallurgical coal is railed to the R G Tanna Coal Terminal and Barney Point Coal Terminal at the Port of Gladstone, a natural protected deepwater harbour with a combined annual throughput capacity in excess of 45 million tonnes per annum.
The R G Tanna Coal Terminal holds 600,000 tonnes of stockpile capacity exclusively for Curragh’s export coal, and utilises flexible and efficient handling systems with a loading rate of up to 6,000 tonnes per hour at each of three loading berths. The Terminal is capable of loading large cape-size vessels up to 230,000 dead weight tonnes. This specialised and highly efficient terminal facility also has the capacity during loading to blend up to four coal types to meet customer specifications.
The R G Tanna Coal Terminal has international quality assurance certification to AS/NZS ISO 9001:2000 and its proven reliability enhances Curragh’s reputation as a reliable supplier.
