Curragh directly employs around 400 people across our operation.
The majority of Curragh’s employees live in accommodation provided by the company in the nearby town of Blackwater. The architect-designed accommodation is acknowledged as amongst the best company-provided housing in Queensland.
Blackwater has a population of approximately 7,000 people, primarily based around the coal mining industry. Curragh has contributed significant funds for housing, community recreational facilities and public infrastructure in the town and continues to contribute to the local area through donations to community groups and the active participation of employees in such groups.
Blackwater residents have access to a wide range of sporting facilities including a nine-hole golf course, Olympic swimming pool and an indoor sports complex. Educational facilities including pre-schools, primary schools and the high school are well established and highly regarded. A large number of community groups cater for a wide range of resident and civic needs.
Curragh is proud to be a major sponsor of the Blackwater International Coal Centre – an iconic $9 million development, showcasing Australia’s coal industry to the world. Completed in mid 2008, the centre will include an interpretive centre for tourists, visitors, students and local residents, as well as an exhibition space, cinema and cafe. The centre will provide high-quality amenities for the local community and delivers significant employment and economic benefits to the region.
Curragh makes a substantial direct contribution to the economies of both Queensland and Australia through the generation of export income and indirectly through expenditure on employee wages, royalties, taxes, freight and port charges as well as support of many ancillary businesses.
